Nestled in the heart of southeastern North Carolina, Pembroke is a small-town rich in Native American heritage, natural beauty, and Southern hospitality. Incorporated in 1895, Pembroke offers visitors and residents a unique blend of history, education, and outdoor adventure.
Pembroke is home to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the 575th federally recognized tribe in the United States and the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi River and one of the most influential Indigenous communities in the Southeast. The Lumbee Tribe’s traditions, art, storytelling, and strong sense of community are woven into everyday life throughout the region. Tribal headquarters, cultural events, powwows, and the nearby Lumbee Cultural Center all help preserve and celebrate this vibrant heritage.
At the center of the town stands University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a nationally recognized university founded in 1887 to educate Native American teachers. Today, UNC Pembroke is one of the most diverse universities in the South and remains deeply connected to Lumbee history and culture. The university brings energy and opportunity to the community through academics, athletics, arts, and cultural programs while maintaining its commitment to Indigenous heritage.
Nature lovers are drawn to the scenic Lumbee River, also widely known as the Lumber River, which winds through the region’s forests and wetlands. Designated as a National Wild and Scenic River, it offers kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and breathtaking views of cypress trees, blackwater swamps, and abundant wildlife. For generations, the river has been central to Lumbee identity and life in Robeson County.
One of Pembroke’s greatest advantages is its convenient location near many of the Southeast’s most popular destinations. The world-famous golf resorts of Pinehurst are about an hour away, making championship golf and luxury resorts easily accessible. The beautiful beaches of Myrtle Beach are less than two hours from Pembroke, offering quick access to the Atlantic coast, entertainment, and seafood dining. For mountain lovers, the majestic Great Smoky Mountains National Park can be reached within a day’s drive, providing unforgettable hiking, waterfalls, and panoramic mountain scenery.
Whether you are exploring Lumbee culture, attending UNC Pembroke, paddling along the river, or using the town as a gateway to beaches, golf courses, and mountain escapes, Pembroke offers a distinctive experience rooted in heritage, community, and natural beauty.
